How many companies are registered in the UK?
5,190,464 companies were active on the Companies House register at the August 2026 snapshot. That is the whole population these pages draw from: every UK limited company, wherever it is based, with its registered office, incorporation date, officers, filing history and up to four SIC codes describing what it does.
Is there a list of UK companies you can search?
Yes, and it is public. Companies House publishes the register, and anyone can look up a company for free. What the official search will not do is let you slice it: give me firms in this trade, in these postcodes, incorporated in the last ninety days, that have a working website and an email I can actually reach. That is the job these pages set up, and it is what a usable list of UK companies means in practice.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Companies House keeps one register for the whole United Kingdom, so a company based in England sits in the same dataset as one based in Glasgow or Belfast. The practical split is geographic rather than legal: you filter by the postcode of the registered office. The city pages above are shortcuts to the busiest of those, and the postcode filter reaches everywhere else.
One caveat worth knowing before you build a territory list. A registered office is where a company’s paperwork lives, not necessarily where it trades. Plenty of firms register at their accountant’s address, and a great many register in London while working nowhere near it. Treat the address as where to start looking, not as a service area.
