UK SIC 2007 · 69101

Solicitors (SIC code 69101)

UK law firms file here. It covers solicitors regulated by the SRA (Solicitors Regulation Authority) in England and Wales, or by the Law Society of Scotland. High-street firms, small specialists and the corporate ranks of City firms all sit under it.

This division puts two regulated professions together. Accountancy dominates the register. Code 69201 covers accounting and auditing practices. Code 69202 holds the large population of bookkeepers. Code 69203 is for dedicated tax consultancies. On the legal side, 69102 marks solicitor firms. Code 69109 sweeps up patent and copyright agents, plus other legal services such as will writers and paralegal practices. The accounting codes run from sole practitioners to national firms. Incorporated solicitor practices are usually SRA-regulated entities.

Buyer intent

Who prospects SIC 69101 companies

Lots of suppliers chase these firms, because they buy software and services every year. They need practice management platforms, tax and audit tools, legal case management and professional indemnity insurance. They also buy outsourced paralegal or bookkeeping capacity, and marketing to win their own clients. A newly incorporated practice usually means a partner or senior manager has gone solo. That is the best moment to win them onto a software stack. Recruiters work this division non-stop, because qualified staff are scarce and growing practices come back again and again.

How to read SIC 69101

SIC 69101 is a five-digit code, and the digits are not arbitrary. The first two, 69, are the division, legal and accounting activities. Add the third and you have group 691; the fourth narrows it to a class, and the fifth to the subclass, which is the level Companies House actually asks a company to pick. The whole division sits under section M, professional, scientific and technical activities, the broadest tier there is. Reading a code left to right therefore goes from a whole sector down to one activity.

A company chooses its own codes when it incorporates and can change them on any confirmation statement. It may list up to four, and Companies House does not check whether they are right. That is why 69101 is worth reading as a claim the company made about itself rather than as a verified fact, and why the first-position and any-position counts above differ.

Measured on the August 2026 register, the busiest registered-office post towns for 69101 are London (325), Manchester (34), Birmingham (27), Leeds (23) and Liverpool (11). Those are registered-office locations, which is where the paperwork sits rather than necessarily where the work happens, so treat them as where to start looking rather than as a service area.

Targeting

Using SIC 69101 as a filter

838 companies is 0.02 per cent of the 5,190,464 active companies on the UK register, and ranks 69101 6th most used of the 6 codes we track in division 69. That is the pool before any filter. Whether it is a big market for you depends on what you sell, but it is the number every other filter on this page cuts down from.

Almost everybody who uses 69101 means it: 767 of 838 companies put it first, leaving only 71 carrying it as a secondary code. That makes it an unusually clean filter. You can match on the code alone and trust that the companies you get really are in this line of work.

The population is concentrated: the five busiest post towns hold 50 per cent of it, and London alone accounts for 39 per cent. If you sell nationally, those five towns are most of the market. If you sell locally and you are not in one of them, expect a much smaller pool and widen the radius early.

In practice the code on its own is rarely the whole filter. Pair 69101 with an incorporation date to catch companies in their first months, when they are still choosing suppliers, or with a filing deadline to reach them while the year end is on their mind. A worked example for this code: 69101, registered office in London, incorporated in the last ninety days, which turns a 838 company pool into a list you can write to in an afternoon. Add the poor-website filter if what you sell is a website, or a recent change of officer if you sell to whoever just took the job. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Are barristers filed under SIC 69101?

No. Barristers file 69102. Solicitors file 69101. Patent attorneys and other legal work sit in 69109. The split matters: solicitor firms are the only ones that can take on most B2B mandates.

Are Scottish solicitors covered by the same SIC code?

Yes. SIC 69101 works UK-wide. Scottish-qualified solicitors answer to the Law Society of Scotland. They still file the same code as firms in England.
