Where a company's SIC code comes from
Every UK company chooses its SIC codes itself. It gives between one and four when it incorporates, and it confirms or changes them each time it files a confirmation statement. Companies House publishes them as the company's nature of business. It records the codes a company gives rather than checking them against what the business actually does, so a code tells you what the directors said the business is.
That makes the code useful and imperfect at once. It is the one industry label every company on the register carries, which is why it is the standard way to find companies in a trade. It can also be out of date, or chosen loosely: a firm that has moved into a new line of work may still list the code it picked on day one.

How do I find the SIC code of a company?
Type the company name or its company number into the lookup above. It reads the company's entry on the Companies House register and lists every SIC code it gives, with what each one covers. On the Companies House service itself the same codes sit on the company's overview page, under Nature of business (SIC).
Can a company have more than one SIC code?
Yes. A company can list up to four SIC codes. The register keeps them in the order the company gave them, and most people read the first one as its main activity. That is why a company can turn up under more than one code when you search the register by industry.
How do I change my company's SIC code?
On the confirmation statement. A company confirms or updates its SIC codes every time it files one, which is at least once a year, and it can file a confirmation statement early if the business has changed and the codes need to change with it.
What does SIC code 99999 mean?
99999 is the code for a dormant company: one that is registered but not trading. A company that has never traded, or has stopped for now, often lists 99999 and nothing else.
Is this the official record?
