How marketing agencies find new clients in the UK
Most agencies live on referrals until the referrals dry up. The steadiest extra source of clients is new companies: they need a website, a brand and their first customers, and most have not chosen anyone yet.
Watch: How Leadistry works
Most small agencies win their clients from referrals, and most go through a quiet month when the referrals stop. The fix is a second source that does not depend on who you know. This guide covers the sources that work for UK agencies, and how to run the one that scales best: reaching new companies in their first months.
Where UK agencies actually find clients
- Referrals and repeat work. The best clients, but you cannot turn the tap on.
- Partnerships. Accountants, web developers and print firms meet new businesses first. A two-way referral deal with one or two of them is worth more than most ad spend.
- Content and search. Case studies and local pages bring in people already looking. It is slow to build and keeps working.
- Directories and awards. Useful for trust, rarely a source of volume.
- Outreach to companies that need you now. A short, specific email to the right company at the right moment. This is the one you control.
Tell Leadistry the trades and towns you want. Each morning your Feed shows new companies that match, with a checked website and email and a first email written for you to approve. 25 free leads, no card.
Why new companies are the best outreach target
A new company needs a website, a logo, social pages and its first customers. It has usually not picked anyone to help yet, and it is making those choices in its first months. About 391,000 new companies were set up in the twelve months to August 2026 in the 74 UK cities we measured. The figures for each city show how many that is near you.
Every company is on the public record at Companies House, with its trade (its SIC code), its registered office and its directors. That lets you pick the trades you do your best work for, in the towns you want to work in.
A simple weekly routine
- Pick two or three trades you already have results for, for example restaurants, builders or beauty salons. Our guide to choosing SIC codes helps.
- Pick your area by postcode district. Every UK city has a page with its busiest districts, for example Manchester or Sunderland.
- Keep only companies you can reach: a real email on their own domain, and a website you have looked at.
- Write one short email that names what they have just started and offers one concrete thing. Our first-line examples show the difference between a line that gets read and one that does not.
- Send a few a day from your own mailbox, and follow up once.
What to say in the first email
Keep it to four or five sentences. Say you saw they have just started, say what you do for companies like theirs in one line, give one example or result you can prove, and ask one easy question. Never claim to have seen something you have not, and never promise results you cannot show.
UK rules allow a business email to a limited company's address when it is relevant and has an easy opt-out. Our plain guide to legitimate interest sets out the detail.
How Leadistry does this for agencies
You tell Leadistry the trades and towns you want once. Every morning it reads the new registrations, keeps the companies with a checked website and email, and writes the first email for you to read and approve. It sends from your own mailbox, a few a day. The first 25 leads are free with no card, and a lead whose first email bounces is credited back.

Common questions
How do marketing agencies get new clients?
Mostly from referrals, then partnerships with accountants and web developers, content that ranks in search, and outreach. Outreach is the only one you control day to day, and it works best aimed at companies that need an agency now, such as new companies.
Is it legal to cold email businesses in the UK?
Yes, to limited companies and other corporate bodies, when the email is relevant to their business, says who you are and gives an easy way to opt out. Sole traders and partnerships are treated like individuals and need consent.
Where can I find a list of new companies in my area?
Companies House publishes every registration. Leadistry reads them each morning and filters by trade and postcode district, keeping only companies with a checked website and email. Each UK city page on Leadistry shows how many new companies it had in the last year.
How many cold emails should an agency send a day?
Start at about five a day from a mailbox you already use, and build slowly to about thirty. Send on set days and hours, never in a burst.
