Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas (SIC division 06)
Division 06 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 2 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 06
Two codes, and they behave very differently. 06100, extraction of crude petroleum, is almost entirely first-position filings: companies that really are in oil extraction. 06200, natural gas, is the opposite, with only around a third putting it first, because it is frequently carried as a secondary code by energy businesses whose main activity sits elsewhere. Read the two separately or the picture misleads you.
A large share of this division is corporate structure rather than operations: licence-holding vehicles, joint venture entities and subsidiaries of much larger groups. That makes it a poor list for volume selling and a good one for mapping. Energy recruiters, offshore insurers, decommissioning contractors and specialist tax advisers all use the public record here to work out who owns what and which entities are still filing. Officer overlap between companies is often the most useful signal on the page.
How to read a division 06 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 06 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 06 shares those digits: all 2 codes below begin 06, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 06 sits inside section B, mining and quarrying, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 06 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 06100, extraction of crude petroleum.
Working division 06 as a list
Division 06 holds 2 codes and 1,827 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 06100 accounts for 64 per cent on its own, and the other 1 code accounts for the rest. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 06100 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.
More on working division 06
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 06 questions
Why do so many companies list 06200 as a secondary code?
Because natural gas is frequently one activity among several for an energy business. Only about a third of the companies carrying 06200 put it first. If you want gas extraction specifically, filter to first position. If you want everyone with a stake in it, match any of the four SIC positions and expect a broader, more corporate list.
Is a North Sea contractor's personal company in this division?
Usually not. Individual engineers and consultants contracting offshore normally sit in 09100, mining support service activities, or in an engineering code in division 71. Division 06 is mostly the licence and operating entities themselves. If you are selling to contractors rather than operators, 09100 is the better filter.
