What sits in division 26
The largest of the newly covered divisions and the most varied. Consumer electronics, 26400, and electronic components, 26110, lead it, followed by two measurement and control codes, 26511 and 26512, and computer manufacture at 26200. This is where UK electronics design and low-volume manufacture actually lives, and a good deal of it is small engineering-led firms rather than factories.
Component distributors, contract electronics manufacturers, PCB fabricators and test equipment suppliers sell into this division constantly. Specialist recruiters do too, because embedded and RF engineering skills are scarce. The instrumentation codes, 26511 and 26512, are worth separating from the rest: those companies sell into industrial process and laboratory markets and buy very differently from a consumer electronics business. Cambridge and the Thames Valley are disproportionately represented.
How to read a division 26 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 26 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 26 shares those digits: all 5 codes below begin 26, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 26 sits inside section C, manufacturing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

Is a company that designs but does not manufacture electronics in division 26?
Frequently yes, and that is a known blur in the classification. A fabless design house often files a division 26 code because that is where its product sits, even though the physical work is contracted out. Some use 71129 engineering design instead. Match on any SIC position and expect both.
What is the difference between 26511 and 26512?
26511 is measuring and testing equipment that is not for industrial process control, so laboratory and general instrumentation. 26512 is specifically industrial process control equipment. The buyers are genuinely different: one sells into labs and R and D, the other into plant and factory automation.
