Activities of households as employers of domestic personnel (SIC division 97)
Division 97 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 1 code, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 97
An unusual corner of the public record. 97000 exists for households employing domestic staff, and in the UK it is used far more often by the companies arranging that employment than by households themselves: nanny and housekeeper agencies, private household staffing firms and payroll services for domestic employers. Only around three fifths file it first, which fits a population that is really a service industry wearing a household label.
Domestic payroll bureaux, employers' liability insurers, DBS checking and background screening providers all sell into this division. So do the accountants who handle PAYE for private employers, which is a niche most practices avoid. The population is small enough to work in full, and because these businesses are often run by one or two people, the decision-maker is usually the person named on the public record.
How to read a division 97 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 97 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 97 shares those digits: the one code below begin 97, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 97 sits inside section T, activities of households, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 97 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 97000, activities of households as employers of domestic personnel.

Division 97 questions
Why would a company use a household employment code?
Because its work is arranging or administering domestic employment, and 97000 is the closest fit in the classification. It is a good example of a code being used by the service around an activity rather than the activity itself. Take the description loosely and check what each company actually does.
Is a cleaning company in 97000?
Usually not. Commercial and domestic cleaning firms normally use 81210 or 81222 in division 81. 97000 is about employing household staff rather than providing a cleaning service, though a few agencies placing housekeepers sit on the line and could reasonably file either.
