Every limited company in the UK has to tell the government what it is doing. Not some of them. All of them.

There are five and a half million of them on the public record. Last financial year alone, eight hundred and one thousand new ones were registered.

And every single one files the same handful of things. Who runs it. Where it is registered. What it does, in a standard trade code. And once a year, its accounts. All public. All free to look at.

The accounts have a deadline. Nine months after the year end. Miss it, and the penalty starts at a hundred and fifty pounds and climbs to fifteen hundred. It doubles if you are late two years running.

So if you sell to other businesses, this is the most reliable list in the country. Who exists, what they do, where they are, and how new they are. Nobody reads five million filings, though. That was always the hard part.
