How do you find a company's website and check it is theirs?

We search for the company with an ordinary web search, then open the website we find. We match it to the company's Companies House filing: the company name, the registered postcode and the details the site publishes. Only a site that matches is delivered as the company's website.

A website guessed from a company's name is never delivered as a checked one. Guessing is often wrong, because many companies share similar names.

How we read websites

Our crawler reads only publicly accessible pages. It respects robots.txt and uses a clearly identifiable user agent. We never log in to anything to look.

When a site stops working

Websites we hold are opened again every month. If a site cannot be reached on two monthly checks in a row, the company is taken out of the leads we deliver and searched for again. A company that has moved to a new website can then be found there.

Company data comes from Companies House under the Open Government Licence. Websites and emails are found on each company's own site and checked against the filing, field by field, so every claim traces to a source. Nothing is bought from brokers, and no email address is guessed from a pattern.
